From kinetic theory to dissipative fluid dynamics

We present the results of deriving the Israel-Stewart equations of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics from kinetic theory via Grad’s 14-moment expansion. Working consistently to second order in the Knudsen number, these equations contain several new terms which are absent in previous treatments.

Dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics: a new way to derive the equations of motion from kinetic theory.

We rederive the equations of motion of dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics from kinetic theory. In contrast with the derivation of Israel and Stewart, which considered the second moment of the Boltzmann equation to obtain equations of motion for the dissipative currents, we directly use the latter's definition. Although the equations of motion obtained via the two approaches are formally id...

Theory and simulation of micropolar fluid dynamics

This paper reviews the fundamentals of micropolar fluid dynamics (MFD), and proposes a numerical scheme integrating Chorin’s projection method and time-centred split method (TCSM) for solving unsteady forms of MFD equations. It has been known that Navier–Stokes equations are incapable of explaining the phenomena at micro and nano scales. On the contrary, MFD can naturally pick up the physical p...

Kinetic Theory for Neuronal Network Dynamics∗

We present a detailed theoretical framework for statistical descriptions of neuronal networks and derive (1+1)-dimensional kinetic equations, without introducing any new parameters, directly from conductance-based integrate-and-fire neuronal networks. We describe the details of derivation of our kinetic equation, proceeding from the simplest case of one excitatory neuron, to coupled networks of...

Fluid Dynamic Limits of the Kinetic Theory of Gases

These three lectures introduce the reader to recent progress on the hydrodynamic limits of the kinetic theory of gases. Lecture 1 outlines the main mathematical results in this direction, and explains in particular how the Euler or NavierStokes equations for compressible as well as incompressible fluids, can be derived from the Boltzmann equation. It also presents the notion of renormalized sol...
